Installing Foam Underlayment for your Laminate Flooring

Foam underlayment Instructions

Simple Instructions

Foam underlayment has a plastic strip on one end that goes along the wall and up the wall that will be covered by the baseboard, and the other end has a strip of adhesive tape. As you unroll each roll, the clear plastic end lies on top of the end with adhesive strip and two white pieces of foam will be butted up against each other.

Then   Ensure the two white sides are as close as they can be and lay one over the other and tack it down. That is how you will know if it's on upside down. If the tape strip is down, it is backwards. It is very important that the Foam underlayment run the same direction as the flooring.

Next Step:

Cover the floor with the foam underlayment and then put the sheet should  right up against the first sheet that you installed. Peel back the covering of the adhesive tape on the first sheet and smooth the plastic edge of the second sheet down onto the tape of the first sheet

Final

Remove any additonal foam underlayment with a razor to remove any underlayment around any obstructions like vents and corners

Foam Underlayment for Floating Floors / Engineered Floors

When installing Floating floors, engineered floors, some solid strip and plank, and some parquet. Solid wood flooring is never recommended below grade, but some solid wood flooring manufacturers now recommend their products for glue-down over slabs. A vapor retarder is recommended any time you install a solid 3/4 –inch wood flooring over concrete.

When plywood is used to install as a subfloor for laminate or vinyl finishes, you must ensure that the plywood is secured so that there is no movement at all. Once it has been secured, you will need to put in one other foam underlayment. This will allow the laminate to expand and contract as normal. If your laminate has the backing on it, (which some usually do) then, of course, you won't need it. Some vinyl floorings may come pre-installed with the foam backing already attached.
